Overland High School has no such thing as a typical student. Anyone is able to attend our school, It is a school full of diversity which is something we take pride in.

I am a cliché, among heavy handed clichés. As the Speech and Debate nerd I am, spending the occasional afternoon I have open reading a BBC article, my life is not applicable of most, and that is a substantial most, high school students. I am not at all the picture of the “typical student” at Overland, but at such a diverse high school, who is to say exactly what the typical student will look like? I have minimal commonality with the All-star basketball players at our school, and I am no more akin to the president of the Chess Club, or even the Editor in Chief of the Newspaper; but as a proud Trailblazer, I fully understand that I have common ground with all of the students at Overland as a determined, and often triumphant force to be reckoned with. For every student at Overland there is a family waiting for the new member they never knew they were missing. We stress involvement at any level that if not within the school itself can be within the community, which influences most students to become involved in something. The opportunity exists for everyone to find a niche, and in many ways to be able to create their own, for example, this year a group of students began their very own philosophy club. But, even if Voltaire’s thought’s on creating the, “best of all possible world’s” doesn't interest you, maybe you can try learning the guitar, or even seeing how much you might actually know about Anime. Overland is for the involved student, the student who is willing to try many things to find their very own family. Despite my obvious quirks for extemporaneous speeches in class, in the spirit of involvement I am the typical Trailblazer at Overland High School. There has never been an overwhelming need for every student to excel to near Valedictorian status, but as long as you make the inviting and positive atmosphere that cultivates the diversity that we cherish, Overland High School’s typical student could very well, be you.

Overland HS is one of the most diverse schools in the country, with over 60 languages spoken by students from around the world. This is a great place to get to know people from other cultures and countries. Overland also has a STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) program that challenges students to excel. I feel that a typical student is one who is open to learning and eager to be challenged in their education, preparing them for college and life beyond school.
