I want to use study abroad to improve my Spanish, but don't just want to go to the typical locations that all students go to to do this (Spain, Argentina, Mexico). What are some more unusual programs that you recommend?

What about looking into studying in Puerto Rico? It is a US territory which means that you don't even need to have a current passport to travel there. Yet everyone speaks Spanish and there are a few universities to choose from. It's a beautiful place and I highly recommend going there at some point, even if you end up studying somewhere else.

I do not think that there is a traditional place per se, it depends of what you do out your experience abroad. You can decide to go to typical locations, as you call them, and be with other US students or you can explore less familiar contexts, like some less known neighborhoods in Madrid or Barcelona, and get to know local people. We have two programs in the Basque Country (San Sebastian and Bilbao), where I am writing from and I can assure you that students did not know how unexpectedly rich this place is culturally before they came. Alicante is also a less known city where students find themselves very comfortable. We also have three programs in Costa Rica and semester after semester, students are sad to leave after intense relationships with their families and friends. The most important aspect of study abroad is to find a program that offers you opportunities for interaction with local people, and this can be done both in less know destinations but also in typical destinations.

Off the beaten path in Europe are the Canary Islands which is Spain, but not (mainland) Spain.

Equatorial Guinea is Africa's Only Spanish-Speaking Country.

Least touristed spots in South America include Bolivia and Uruguay. It will take some work, but there are some great opportunities available to you here - https://www.studyabroad101.com/countries/uruguay

Belize is a gem in Central America - https://www.studyabroad101.com/countries/belize
