At first glance while walking around the University, a large portion of the student body looks like what most people would agree a stereotypical frat member would look like: white, fit, wearing a polo shirt and short khaki shorts, and having lots of expensive, name-brand accessories like watches and sunglasses. If you dig deeper, you will find that there is actually a large diversity of students. The main thing that brings them all together, though, is that they all have a purpose for being there. No matter who you talk to, they all have a set goal in their mind, whether short-term or long-term. It could be to pass a test in Chemistry, finish their paper tonight, or just stay on track with their grades so they can graduate and continue to do what they love.

All of the students I have come into contact with at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville have been kind and hospitable- exactly what one may expect attending college in the South. Students always have a variety of interests since the school is so big, and everyone can find their own place to fit in because there are so many options.

Any type of person could, and should, attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

The most daunting thing about UTK is the sheer size, but in reality, it is not nearly as intimidating as it seems. The physical size of the campus is large, but that means there are multiple libraries, student centers, a great football stadium, a fabulous agriculture campus, and an impressive communications building. Furthermore, the actual population of the school is not a bad thing. Because of the large number of students, there are numerous student groups and activities.

For me, one of the great things about UTK is the availability of supplemental student programs and lectures that are free for students. The International House offers unique cultural and social immersions that provide great perspective and experience.

Most importantly, the quality of education I have received at the University of Tennessee is indescribable. I've been blessed to meet great professors-- like Dr. Stephanie Bohon, Dr. Victor Ray, and Dr. Regina Benedict-- who take special interest in helping their students both academically and professionally.

Typical is a difficult word to describe a student at the University of Tennessee when the campus is frequented by over 25,000 students everyday. I would say students who attend UTK are ambitious and want to push their limits to experience culture and develop personally and professionally. The campus is big but there are several hundred different groups from LGBT, Harry Potter fans, groups for those who like boardgames and live action role play, or even a cappella groups. UTK wants strong-willed students who are ready to make an impact on their peers and the world around them.

I really would be doing the University environment a disservice in attempting to generalize such an expansive number of demographics attending the university; however I do believe one has an easier time identifying the less appealing and more flamboyant of the groups that appear more evident and that is the greek - life frat male who is consumed by the desire of identity and likeness among peers and pursues the ascension of the social ladder religiously. That is the more pessimistic view of course. Knoxville is a large enough campus to where I believe anyone with a pursuit, a passion, or simply wanting the ability to find their way can in some shape or form construct some path with the aid of this university.

At the University of Tennessee, there are many types of students. However, I would say that there are two main types of students. First, there is the very studious person, who you would always find at the library of local coffee shop studying for their next exam. They may sometimes attend a sporting event, or hang out with friends. Then, you have the very social student. These are typically the people you find at parties on the weekend or even during the week, and at every sporting event. They would usually be with friends and sometimes they study. Because this is such a wide variety of people, The University of Tennessee is really for anyone who would like a big school atmosphere. Someone who should attend UTK could be a very quiet person, or very social. As long as they know how to keep their grades high, it is the perfect school for them.

It can be the best place ever or can be a place where you work super hard. Also most students are able to handle the fact that UT is a huge school. Depending on the classes students take you could be looking at a lecture with 500 people or an English 255 class with only 25 people.

Someone who is driven and who wants a good education should come to UT. UT is hard and very stressful at times so you have to be able to not get lost in the size of the school.

There is no one description of a typical University of Tennessee Knoxville student. This is a diverse campus, and we stress that aspect of our university. Each and every day we are working to continue to make the campus even more diverse. However, each and every Volunteer makes a promise to always help his or her fellow Vol. We live by the motto "Vols help Vols". We support our brothers and sisters in every way. So if I were to choose one special quality that a typical Volunteer should have to attend the university, it would be supportive.
