A typical MIT student is enthusiastic about science and technology primarily, but has other outside interests and goals. Maybe they play an instrument, dance ballet, perform theatrically, have a passion for sustainability, or spin fire. MIT student find ways of taking their primary passion and applying it to the rest of their life. They create apps for fun. They finagle skateboards to move with the touch of a remote control (so they can get to class faster). They never stop dreaming of a more connected, more technical world.

I started an all-girls FIRST robotics team after all the boys on the already existing team at my high school wouldn't let me join just because I was a girl. In our first year, our girls team won first place in the county-wide competition and the motivate award at states. MIT students take something they believe in strongly and make it became a reality-- and they have fun with it too! That's where eccentric comes in; you'll never meet a boring MIT student. It's because MIT students are filled with passion. How else could they survive being at one of the hardest colleges in the company? They love what they are studying to the bottom of their hearts!

While you will find lots of people here who did had perfect SAT scores or GPAs in high school, everyone here has a story. Some students already came to MIT with their own start-up and company, others have done countless volunteer hours across the globe. However, it doesn't even have to be that grand, because not everyone has the appropriate monetary support to support those kinds of ventures. There is no typical profile of an MIT student. Everybody has some sort of quirk. Everybody is a nerd. Everybody is a geek. But within that there is a full spectrum of people. The one thing that all MIT students share is the desire for knowledge and success.

A typical MIT student is driven, creative, and helpful. To attend MIT, one should have the work ethic and discipline required to complete difficult problems and PSETs, and be patient enough to work through difficult problems. Collaboration is necessary for success at MIT, so the ability to work well with others is extremely important, as well.

Though every student at MIT is unique in his upbringing, interests, and background, there are two major characteristics which are common to all. The first is motivation. Students are passionate about their interests and majors, and show it- the common saying at MIT is ‘mens et manus,’ meaning mind and hand. We are not only constantly thinking about science or technology, but also finding ways to actively participate in these fields in a new, creative manner. Another feature common to MIT students is teamwork. This campus places great importance on cooperation. After all, most discoveries and inventions can only come about when motivated minds come together. Teamwork also helps develop a tightly knit community, which is necessary in a fast-paced and high stressed environment.

I believe that the average MIT student can be described in to words: eccentric and driven. Is intelligence part of the equation? Of course, but the people who go to MIT aren't just a bunch of brainiacs who got a perfect score on their SATs. Most students here, in my opinion, are very outgoing and extremely intelligent. They all have their strengths and weakness in different subjects. Everyone here has a very interesting background.

You should love to study and learn. MIT will break you and push your limits to extents you never imagined were possible. However, if you love learning and being in the forefront of scientific discovery you'll love this place.
