Brian Monetti, I <3 History
Most people associate July 4 1776 with the Declaration of Independence, but this date is not when it was written or signed, but rather the date that it was ratified by Congress. Most of the signing actually occurred on August 2 1776, for several reasons, including some states being a bit late to actually decide to sign it, and also the fact that multiple copies needed to be printed. The actual writing took place over several weeks, from June 11 to June 28 1776, with a group of appointees from Congress meeting and going through several drafts. On June 28 it was presented to Congress, and several wording changes were made over the next few days, and the final version was approved and ratified on July 4, 1776.
So to sum it up, its hard to give a specific date as to when the Declaration of Independence was written, because it went through many iterations over several weeks. The important date of July 4th is when it was ratified by Congress.
