The nice aspect of a university as large as this one is that everyone, is represented. While the majority of the students are white, there is also a sizable population of minorities. While Minnesota is, statistically, a state with a large Caucasian population, the University employs affirmative action to make sure that those who belong to other races are represented. In recent years, the University has become more selective. Only a few years ago, the school's average ACT was a 26. This year, it was a 28. This is not, per se, the University's fault; they simply have had many more applications than in the past and from that pool took the very best. Therefore, the average U of M student has proven him/herself worthy of an excellent education.

But we also have the artsy people, international students, greek life people, "the leaders of tomorrow" types. I'd say, as far as people go, it's a very typical college-esque place, but more innovative than academic (a school that focuses more on what we can do with our future than teaching us the academia of the past; as a lover of classic things that bugs me a bit but plenty of people love it.)
