Organization logo

Valerie Grey has been a College Writing Instructor for over 15 years. After earning a Ph.D. in English Literature from Binghamton University in 1998, she moved to the Pacific Northwest to tutor for Johns Hopkins University's Distance Writing Program and to finish her novel. She is currently at work on a second novel, and, when she isn't reading voraciously, she enjoys hiking and "birding." She has been singing and playing blues and folk-rock on the guitar since her undergraduate days and likes to tell her students that listening to good music will make them better writers. On days when her writing is going especially well, she's convinced that all a good writer needs is time, good rhythm, and a relaxing environment where his or her imagination can roam free. Valerie's approach to teaching is to help students find strategies that work for them in, to quote Joseph Campbell, "discovering their bliss" as they choose manageable topics for writing. She likes to guide students through the process of thinking through problems, rather than attacking them, and getting them down on paper where they can be demystified and clearly understood if not completely solved. She sees writing and thinking as inseparable, and critical reading as a essential skill for the 21st century. Inspired by Anne Lamott's guidebook for writers "Bird by Bird," she likes to help students patiently proceed step by step through the various reading and writing projects they encounter in their academic lives, but even more importantly, to unravel the mysteries of meaning in works that may at first appear confusing and even daunting. She approaches research somewhat like a detective, encouraging students to blend personal narrative with facts and data to enliven their essays and develop, above all, their own distinct, original voice. * Community College writing and literature instructor for over 15 years * Tutor for gifted and talented students with Johns Hopkins University's CTY and CTYOnline for 17 years * Private tutor in literature, expository writing, and test prep for the past three years * AP Reader for the AP English Literature exam for the past six years
